Jerry Goldsmith

Jerry Goldsmith (1929-2004) was a prolific and talented composer of music for films and television. I'm struck by the breadth of Goldsmith's work; he had a command of a wide range of musical styles.

While working at CBS in the 1960s, Goldsmith wrote scores for several Twilight Zone episodes. He said he especially liked that gig because he was given great freedom to write whatever music he wanted. The Invaders (episode 15 of the Twilight Zone's second series) had no dialogue until the very end, and Goldsmith's score contributed greatly to the drama of the story. I like the whole score, and I particularly like one simple but expressive section in 5/4 that I've excerpted and made available here as MP3 audio and also as sheet music.

Rod Serling's narration from the end of The Invaders:

These are the invaders, the tiny beings from the tiny place called Earth, who would take the giant step across the sky to the question marks that sparkle and beckon from the vastness of the universe only to be imagined. The invaders, who found out that a one-way ticket to the stars beyond has the ultimate price tag. And we have just seen it entered in a ledger that covers all the transactions of the universe, a bill stamped "paid in full," and to be found... in the Twilight Zone.
